3/8/2001 - WHY?

Why another medical web site? The question may indeed come up spontaneously to anyone who is aware of the consistent load of health-related material already held by the Net. Yet, if one looks closer at the content, useful material on –say– rare tumours is definitely scarce. By useful, we mean reliable, current, user-friendly, and, last but not least, easily trackable and accessible.

The whole story begins in June 1999, when WHO authorities designate the Casa di Cura San Pio X of Milan (Italy) as Collaborating Centre for Cancer Control of Uncommon Tumours. Since then a number of bureaucratic and organizative steps have been undertaken and today the Centre is ready to offer its services to the medical community.

So, our initiative does not intend to be "just" another medical web site, but ambitiously aims at becoming a reference point for the medical professional in the oncologic agorà. This will be achieved by creating a portal, i.e., a web site that is intended to be the first place people see when using the Web. To start with, we choose a domain name which is self-explanatory: raretumours.org. Initially, the portal will concentrate mainly on diagnostic issues; most major areas in the field, however, will be eventually included, such as epidemiology, molecular analysis, clinical expression, and treatment of rare tumours.
